Service overview

The C&I Acute Division comprises of our psychiatric inpatient wards, crisis houses, recovery day services, crisis teams and liaison services. The primary purpose is to provide a needs lead service for people experiencing a critical breakdown in their mental wellbeing, this includes people who are having their first experience of mental illness or for people with enduring mental illness.

Role description / tasks

Volunteers will visit our acute division wards/teams as directed by the Voluntary Services Manager/Project Manager:

  • Following any restrictive interventions a patient may experience volunteers will facilitate a debrief with patients, to ensure the patient voice is heard, acting as an advocate by representing their interests independently to help get the care and support then need from their care team.
  • Use a framework provided with the patient to determine the factors that contributed to any incident that led to a restrictive intervention.
  • Identify any factors that can be addressed quickly to reduce the likelihood of a further incident and record information/suggestions for amendments to risk and care plans, such a behavioural support plan, accordingly liaising with staff.

Skills, Qualities and Experience required

  • Good communication & listening skills
  • Be at ease talking with patients/service users
  • Be compassionate, understanding and empathetic
  • Be none judgemental and have patience
  • Have lived experience of mental health and/or substance misuse issues
  • Be flexible and willing to undertake training
