Sir Tom is the Founder and the chairman of Helpforce. He is also the founder of the Chair of The Marshall Institute within the London School of Economics and Political Science and was Chair of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is also a Trustee of The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The King's Fund.

In 2012 he was awarded a knighthood for his services to philanthropy and in 2013 a Beacon Fellowship for Philanthropic Advocacy. Recently he has been awarded the US Ferrari lifetime lectureship by Houston Methodist Medical School for his contribution to global end of life care and an Honorary Degree by Anglia Ruskin University for his analytical and research work into the future of health and social care coverage in Essex.

His passions are philanthropy, innovation, patient-centred healthcare and choral music.

Sir Tom found Helpforce in 2017 with the vision that everyone who visits the hospital will never be alone. A volunteer will pick them up and take them to their appointment. They will stay with the patient, explain what the treatment involves and take the patient home afterwards and remain a companion on the patient's journey.
