Helpforce has welcomed former Cancer Research UK (CRUK) media head, Martin McGlown, to the organisation as the charity’s new Head of Communications, as we look to expand our influence and profile across the healthcare sector.

Martin departed CRUK in January following more than 20 years leading a 16-person media relations team that championed the organisation's scientific research, health initiatives, policy work, and fundraising activities.

Martin, a 52-year-old journalist by background, has stepped into the role of Head of Communications at Helpforce to help us accelerate volunteering's positive impact throughout the health system.

Our Chief Executive Amerjit Chohan said:

“We are delighted to welcome Martin to the Helpforce as our new Head of Communications. He brings a wealth of experience from his leadership role at Cancer Research UK, as well as time spent working as a senior news journalist.

“Helpforce has come a long way in a relatively short space of time. We are recognised as the only independent charity focused exclusively on working with health, care and community organisations to establish high impact volunteering services. But we have huge ambitions and effective communications will be key to achieving them.

“Most pressing is our desire to influence the government’s 10-year Health Plan with our calls for volunteering to be a core part of workforce planning backed by long-term funding.”

During his tenure at CRUK, Martin’s media team successfully highlighted the case for anti-smoking legislation, drove home the importance of cancer being diagnosed early, and promoted multi-million pound fundraising initiatives like Race for Life and Stand Up To Cancer.

He also led a six-strong Patient Liaison function, working with around 6,000 cancer patients and survivors who courageously share their stories and lived experience in support of marcomms activity.

Martin’s previous career in journalism included stints on the London Evening Standard and Birmingham Mail.

Martin said:

“I am thrilled to be joining Helpforce as Head of Communications. It’s a charity that already punches well above its weight and I hope that I can make a significant contribution to its continued growth and impact.

“During my time at CRUK I witnessed the incredible contribution that volunteers make to the charity – be it working in its shops, assisting at fundraising events or helping to influence politicians as campaigners.

“The Helpforce role presented an irresistible opportunity to marry my passion for volunteering with my communications expertise.”
