Winner – Innovation in Volunteering Award

Roy Williams, Senior Volunteer, created an online library of photographs to help volunteers signpost to improve patient and visitor experiences. Roy spent two years identifying and uploading over 350 photographs for the project. The online library includes written directions to common areas and departments often requested by patients and visitors for appointments and treatment. Spending an additional 70 extra hours of editing and formatting, Roy documented main areas, departments and wards across the Oxford Road Campus to aid patients and visitors. Each area was uploaded to an iPad along with an A-Z search facility. Roy said “Being a volunteer for the hospital is very rewarding and a wonderful way of filling my free time. Volunteers vary from students to retired people like myself – we are well supported by our volunteer office staff. It took a lot of time to complete the iPads covering all our departments, but we have found that the volunteers and the public like the fast and modern way we can locate the department and quickly direct them.” The iPads continue to be edited and have now been developed to include a map of the site along with a description and photo of key areas and departments. Sadly, in March 2018, Roy passed away, but the legacy of his online library continues to benefit patients and visitors.
