“My name is Jeanette and I thoroughly enjoy my role as a ward befriender in Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda. The nursing staff have been supportive and they work extremely hard and I would not have been able to do this without them. I spend time in conversation with patients and we chat about general topics such as birds, villages, towns, TV channels, music and places of interest visited in their younger days. It is humbling that some patients whom may initially have not wished to have these chats look forward to me visiting and we get the chance to play games like dominoes, snakes and ladders and ludo.”

“My name is Tina and I am a Maternity Buddy Volunteer in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. I thoroughly enjoy volunteering on the maternity ward, I get on well with all the staff and enjoy helping new mums with babies and chatting to them. The role is rewarding and allows us to make the mother’s stay in hospital as comfortable as possible. We also get the opportunity to cuddle babies! Volunteering has given me the opportunity to learn new skills and the confidence to further my education. I am now in college studying the level three access to nursing qualification.”
