Dawn, we do have gardening and maintenance volunteers. We don't have separate insurance for them, our public liability etc. covers their activities. We ensure they have training relevant to their role, which includes manual handling; we also conduct individual risk assessments for all volunteers, which includes their health and abilities; if reasonable adjustments are required, we put them in place, or find a different role for them. We review their risk assessment and role profiles annually.
Hope this helps.

We have developed a gardener role (attached) at our Trust and have come across a couple of issues. The Estates department have expressed concerns that we need a different type of insurance for these volunteers, as they're doing manual work.
I’d be grateful to know if any of you have such a role and if so did you have to take out a different insurance to that of your regular volunteers (such as ward and outpatient volunteers for example). I was hoping a risk assessment would suffice but I don’t think it will.
