Hi all & @paddyhf, @Darren-Wright, @vy-tran

I thought it might be useful to start a conversation about how people have captured experiences of volunteering over the past weeks and months. We were fortunate in the Frimley system to have a ‘Community Panel’ and online group of approx 1500 people who are broadly demographically representative of our community. We used the panel to explore views and experiences of volunteering as part of our scoping work earlier this year. The original survey had 248 responses and closed on the day that the UK went into lockdown so it now provides us with an interesting snapshot of views just before the significant effects of the pandemic were felt. A summary of results and full report can be found here:https://www.frimleyhealthandcare.org.uk/get-involved/community-panel/panels-views-experiences-of-volunteering/

We are now in the process of developing another survey. This will be covering broader experiences of COVID-19, changes to health and care services etc but we will also repeat some of the volunteer questions and it will also contain a focus on community support to try and capture how peoples views and behaviours have changed.

I just wondered if anyone else is considering something similar or has any findings from surveys carried out earlier this year?

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,
This is amazing! We have just been talking about how we can capture such insights as well! Will you plan to produce a report afterwards? @mark-lever, @sally, thought this maybe in your interest?

Thanks for starting this Steve. I had the best of intentions after we spoke about it last week but…..

I think you make a good point that a lot of surveying was done towards the end of last year and it would be really useful to look at “before and after” snapshots.

If there is anyone else that is looking at reviewing their mapping, in light of the upswell of community and volunteering capacity, then we’d be keen to share that.

As I’ve mentioned to quite a few of you. The first year of this project was about proving that volunteering had a strategic role in system planning. I think we’ve proven that now but it would be good if we could empirically demonstrate a shift in attitudes.

Hi,

Yes, we are hoping to move fairly quickly on the next survey and get something out late next week or early the week after. This will be to our existing online panel but we then hope to be able to take the learning and use it as part of a wider piece of engagement with the wider community over the Summer. We are also starting to consider how we can use volunteers as an active part of our engagement but not sure what this might look like yet. There will definitely be an initial report published, probably towards the end of June/Early July if we are able to stick to the timeline.

Thanks Steve – this is really helpful

We are looking at undertaking some research with STPs/ICSs into the response to COVID in terms of volunteering, your Community panel data will be a useful input. Thanks for sharing

Paddy
