Communication Support Volunteer Children’s Therapy Service

An important part of this service is the provision of personalised resources that can help children to communicate their needs, feelings and ideas. Volunteers will work alongside the clinical team to create and produce communication books and other therapy resources.

This role involves:

  • Liaising with families and schools, under the guidance of a therapist/assistant, to collect personalised information about a child e.g. photos, vocabulary etc
  • Using specialist software (Boardmaker) to create personalised books
  • Working with therapists to check, revise and develop the books
  • Printing, laminating and assembling the books

This role would suit people who:

  • Have great communication skills including telephone skills
  • Have good IT skills and are confident learning new software
  • Have an eye for detail
  • Can work in a team and are happy completing tasks independently
  • Can travel to one of our bases

What to expect from the role:

  • To gain knowledge and understanding of children’s communication difficulties
  • Gain practical experience of low tech AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)
  • The opportunity to work alongside clinicians
  • Learn how to use Boardmaker (popular in many settings including schools)
  • Use your skills to directly impact patients and their families

Mandatory training for this role

  • Completion of virtual handbook – Your Volunteer Journey
  • Volunteer Induction Session (3hrs face to face or virtual)
  • E-Learning for Healthcare – Volunteer Learning Modules
  • Local induction and role specific training

Service: Children’s Therapy Services

Location: Lincoln (Beech House) or Spalding (Johnson Hospital)

Days/hours: Flexible – equivalent of 1 day per week/fortnight (Mon-Fri)
