Community Children's Nursing Team - Community Gardening volunteer

Roles and Responsibilities:
This is an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of families with a child or young person who has a complex health need or disability. Access to a safe garden or outside space can be key to having the opportunity to play and relax and can be invaluable to maintaining good mental health. Although it does not involve a regular commitment, the Gardening Volunteer role helps many families who find that they struggle to clear and maintain their garden or outdoor space alongside caring for their child or young person. Often, once the space has been cleared it becomes manageable and less daunting, meaning that families are able to continue the upkeep of the area by themselves.

What we ask of you:

  • To be able to commit to volunteer work for at least 6 months.
  • To undergo enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check.
  • To be aged over 17 years.
  • To be willing to work outdoors.
  • To be able to commit a full morning or evening to any request.
  • To be motivated, friendly, and approachable.
  • To be a good listener and like helping people.
  • To be able to work as part of a team with other volunteers and staff, and to make new people feel welcome.
  • To be willing to undergo all required training, both online and face to face.
  • To observe the policies and procedures of SWFT, in particular Confidentiality, Security and Health & Safety.
  • To complete records if required/ requested to do so.
  • To attend supervision/ debriefs as required.
  • To feedback to Volunteer Coordinator of any relevant issues or concerns.
  • To speak up if you feel uncomfortable in the role.


What you can expect of us:

  • Full training for the role of volunteer.
  • Provision of basic gardening tools and equipment if you do not have access to your own.
  • Membership of a supportive, friendly team.
  • Regular communication and updates.
  • 24hr access to support and advice.
  • Job-specific risk assessment and support.
  • Regular opportunities to de-brief and have supervision.
  • A uniform and PPE where appropriate/ required.
  • Remuneration for mileage and/or other expenses.

Activities may include:

  • General gardening work such as weeding, mowing lawns, strimming, hedge cutting, pruning, planting/ pond clearance.
  • May include wider projects/ minor landscaping such as creating borders, laying sleepers/ bark/ stone chippings.
