Gloucester Community Building Project were commissioned to undertake a piece of work to initiate community responses to diabetes prevention. The organisation takes a place-based community building approach, which means Community Builders go out and meet people in their community to find out about their interests and passions. In doing so, they reveal issues that are important to them.

Although the project is focussed on Diabetes the strengths, and interests, based approach is likely to have an impact on multiple health outcomes. The range of outcomes is being measured by the University of Bristol and will be used inform how this project is expanded beyond the Kingsholm area of Gloucester.

The approach is based on spending time to get to know people in a particular place. Through building relationships connections can be made between individuals and underutilised community assets can be developed.

This project is an excellent example of both improving health at a place level but also recognising the value of a community setting its own health priorities.
