How an NHS trust improved patient experience by extending volunteering from the hospital into the community

26 June 2024

In this webinar learn how the Back to Health Pathway at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust integrates health and community volunteer services and made it business as usual. The Back to Health Pathway tackles system challenges such as patient flow, overstretched staff, high Did not Attends (DNAs) rates and health inequalities.

For the past three years, the volunteering team at George Eliot Hospital has worked with Helpforce and North Warwickshire Place to develop and deliver the Back to Health Pathway. This model offers a combination of proactive and reactive volunteer led services available at different points as needed in the hospital and in the community.

At the end of the first stage of the programme, Helpforce evaluated its impact:

  • 40,107 patients supported
  • DNAs reduced by 5.8%
  • 111 weeks of productivity gained
  • 126 community relationships forged

Through the evidence of impact, the team have now secured funding to sustain the volunteering infrastructure needed for the pathway to become business as usual across place.

Watch the recording below to hear from the teams behind this success and learn how this model can be replicated at your organisation to deliver integrated services across place.
